Phi Alpha Theta (PAT) is committed to bring history to life and the campus community together. In order to achieve this goal of ours, we host various events throughout the academic year that are designed to feed your academic curiosity, educate the student body beyond the classroom, and simply enjoy your time on campus.

The following list describes the events that you can look forward to every quarter. If you are not a member yet but are interested in attending one of our events, please reach out to us so that we can bring you in. Generally, however, you do not have to be a member of PAT to attend our Professor Talks, so feel free to stop by the next time we are live and on campus. Additionally, whether you want to see your favorite professor at one of our Professor Talks, visit a specific museum together, or read and analyze a book with our community members, we always welcome recommendations!

We can’t wait to meet you!

Weekly General Meetings

Throughout the quarter, we will be hosting weekly meetings that are designed to get to know each other, talk about various history or non-history related topics, and play games. We aim to create a welcoming and inclusive environment that will allow you to meet likeminded people. The meeting times and locations will be posted on our website, specifically the news blog and sidebar.

Professor Talks

Our biggest events every quarter are our Professor Talks. Every quarter, we are hosting between three and four of these events that give students interested in history the chance to learn about independent research projects of our curiosity-driven faculty members, their research process, as well as anything non-history related. No topic is off-topic! Additionally, each Professor Talk is followed by a lengthy Q&A session, so feel free to connect with your professors outside the classroom. This is a great opportunity to get to know some of UCLA’s scholars and connect with other students on a cozy afternoon or evening, while taking a study break from your midterms and finals. As a transfer-friendly university, we also welcome suggestions for community college professors who would like to participate in one of our events.

Museum Visits

Among our most recently planned events are our Museum Visits. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, these visits have been restricted to virtual tours in the past, but are planned to be held in-person in the near future. Previously, we entered the world of art as we stopped by the Musée d’Orsay in Paris and examined (and criticized) some of the artwork. With many more museum visits planned in the greater Los Angeles area this academic year, we are looking forward to learn about history beyond the classroom with you!

Book Chats

Similar to our Museum Visits, the Book Chats are also one of our newest planned events. For these events, the PAT community decides on a book that is somewhat history related and discusses its historic accuracy and influences of the author in a very informal fashion. In the past, we have critically analyzed the Magic Tree House book series and had a blast doing so! In the near future, we are looking forward to examine works of all genres and time period.
